Grosvenor and Regency Estate:
Greening for the Future Project
Grosvenor and Regency Residents’ Association has won funding to improve spaces on the estate and enhance resilience to future climate shocks.
We’re looking for ideas from residents to help shape the plans, from drought-proofing green areas to pollinator-friendly planting. Come along to our open sessions to explore the possibilities, hear from experts and give us your input.
We aim to
enhance the existing, run-down green space which houses the ball court and outdoor gym
replace some of the hard landscaping, adding new green infrastructure and other nature- based solutions to:
increase biodiversity, alleviate climate change impact and transform community enjoyment of a space currently used as a walkthrough rather than a place to stop and appreciate nature.
-

Climate resilient, insect-friendly planting
By taking up hard paving and replacing it with planting, we are helping to absorb excess rainwater and help prevent flooding.
By being more aware of which plants are beneficial for insects and biodiversity, we can make the estate part of a chain of green spaces, from Lambeth Palace Garden to St James’s Park, managed to support a healthy environment for people and nature.
-

Community space improvements
Our initial phase of funding covers greening interventions for shared spaces.
We are speak with residents and providing ideas and examples for improvements, as well as engaging children and teaching them about what they might find outdoors.
We aim to make a space that is beautiful and practical for both humans and urban wildlife.
-

Thoughtful, ecological interventions
This project has the support of top entomologists and urban wildlife gardeners.
We are planning on creating habitats that work for insects which also provide interest for humans.
Green interventions such as green roofs and new planting and flower beds will help reduce urban heat radiation in the Summer months.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Urban Wildlife Habitat Creation & Maintenance Workshop
Date to be announced
Grosvenor Hall
Vincent St.
A day to learn about and create habitats for urban wildlife on Grosvenor and Regency estate. We will seek to encourage wildlife onto the estate, and look after what is already here.
We will also learn a little about (stingless!) solitary bees and other invertebrates you might find in a London urban garden.
PREVIOUS EVENTS
Community Consultation & Family day
October 27th
November 8th
Grosvenor Hall
Vincent St.
We held two community open days to discuss the project with residents on the estate, one on a half term week day and one weekend. Posters were put up in all 11 blocks to advertise for the events.
Overall, the residents that attended were positive and supportive of the need for greening on the estate. A map was used to show potential estate plans and gain feedback from the residents.
It was encouraging to see children engaging so well with nature. On the second day, 250 bulbs were planted by resident children, GRRA, and a local gardener on the grass slope outside Grosvenor Hall (with permission).
Example of Estate Greening -Grass Roof Company Greening :
The Poppy Estate
As inspiration we look to the Poppy Estate.
We include a wonderful map of the estate, showing you some of the changes that were made to improve the space and resident experience of the gardens.
Everything in the key has been built/planted with the residents since the project started in 2002.
Example Greening interventions created by the Grass Roof Company
Green roofs can help reduce the impact of heat radiation, as well as providing food resource and habitat for invertebrates, the very building blocks of our ecosystems.
Structures can be modified to be multipurpose and provide shelter for garden insects.
